Reading a weighted syllabus like a strategist

  • Weights are a priority map: an hour spent on a 40% final moves your grade roughly twice as much as the same hour on a 20% category.
  • Small categories are cheap insurance: a 10% "participation" bucket at 100% quietly adds a safety cushion — free points people skip.
  • Check the rounding rule: an 89.5% is a B+ at some schools and an A- at others. Ask before finals week, not after.

Frequently asked questions

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Each category's grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are summed and divided by the total weight: Homework 92 × 30% + Midterm 78 × 30% + Final 85 × 40% = 85.0%. Categories with bigger weights pull the average harder.

Where do I find my category weights?

In the course syllabus — usually a breakdown like "Homework 30%, Midterm 30%, Final 40%". If your teacher uses points instead of percentages, each category's weight is its points share of the total.

Why does the calculator warn when weights don't add to 100%?

Because a missing category silently distorts the average. We still calculate using the weights you entered, but the warning nudges you to check the syllabus — the most common weighted-grade mistake is a forgotten category.

How is this different from the GPA calculator?

This computes one course's grade from its parts (homework, exams). The GPA calculator averages whole courses on the 4.0 scale. For "what do I need on the final?" — that's our Grade Calculator.
