How do I figure out my required daily pace?

Divide the remaining work by the remaining working days: 240 pages with 20 working days left means 12 pages a day, 60 a week on a 5-day rhythm. Recalculate as you go — the pace updates itself, and a week of procrastination shows up immediately as a bigger daily number.

One formula, every deadline

pace = (total − done) ÷ working days left · working days = calendar days adjusted to your week

The "working days per week" selector is the honesty dial. Seven days looks efficient and fails by Thursday; five days matches human lives. The same 240 pages become 12/day on a full week or 17/day on weekdays only — both true, and only one of them is a plan you'll keep. Thesis chapters, exam topics, sales quotas, marathon training miles: the mask changes, the division doesn't.

When the number says "impossible"

Sometimes the honest pace is 40 pages a day and the honest answer is: not like this. That's the calculator working, not failing — discovering impossibility three weeks early is worth more than any motivation poster. The levers are always the same three: later deadline, smaller total, or planned partial delivery. For time-boxing the daily sessions themselves, the timer and Pomodoro pick up where the pace math ends — and the countdown keeps the deadline itself visible.

Business days: the honest deadline math

"Due in 30 days" quietly means 22 working days on a Monday-to-Friday schedule — cut a fifth of the calendar before planning a single task. Worse, deadlines love landing on weekends: a Sunday due date with a 5-day week makes the Friday before your true finish line, two days earlier than the contract reads. Set working days to 5 above and both corrections happen automatically — the daily pace you see is the one your actual workweek must sustain. Add a buffer on top: work expands to fill the time available (Parkinson's law), and the teams that ship on time are the ones whose plan finishes early on paper.
