How the tip calculator works

Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage (the preset buttons cover the common choices), and if you're splitting with friends, add the head count. The calculator shows the tip amount, the grand total and each person's share — updated live as you adjust.

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100 · Total = Bill + Tip · Per person = Total ÷ People

Tipping in the US: quick honest guide

  • Restaurants (table service): 15% baseline, 18% standard, 20%+ for great service.
  • Bars: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab.
  • Delivery: 10–15%, minimum $3–5 — the driver's gas isn't free.
  • Counter service: optional; round up or skip the tablet guilt-trip with a clear conscience.

Worth knowing: in much of Europe and Asia service is already included or tipping is modest (5–10%), and in Japan tipping can even be seen as awkward. Traveling? Check local custom before defaulting to 20%.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?

15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard for table service in the United States. 18% is a solid middle ground, 20%+ says the service made your evening.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette says pre-tax, and no one will ever complain. In practice most people tip on the total because it is the number staring at them — the difference is usually well under a dollar.

How does splitting the bill work in this calculator?

Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the bill and the tip evenly, showing exactly what each person pays — no napkin math at the table.

What about tipping for delivery, taxis or haircuts?

Common US baselines: 10–15% for delivery (minimum a few dollars), 10–15% for taxis and rideshares, 15–20% for haircuts and personal services. When in doubt, 15% is rarely wrong.
