How many hours did I work this week?

Add each day's span (clock-out minus clock-in), subtract unpaid breaks, and sum the week: five 8:30–17:00 days with 30-minute lunches is exactly 40 hours. Hours past your overtime threshold (40/week federally in the US) pay at 1.5× by default. Enter your real times above — the math updates as you type, and your timesheet never leaves this browser.

Where timesheets quietly go wrong

Three small errors eat real money. Unsubtracted breaks: a daily 30-minute lunch left in the count inflates a week by 2.5 hours. Decimal confusion: 8 hours 45 minutes is 8.75, not 8.45 — write it wrong and payroll pays it wrong. And rounding drift: policies that round each punch to the nearest quarter-hour are legal when they cut both ways, but rounding down every day quietly shaves a week's pay. This page keeps minutes exact and shows the decimal only where payroll needs it.

Overtime, honestly split

The weekly total splits at your threshold: everything up to it at the regular rate, everything past it at the multiplier — 44 hours at $20 with 1.5× overtime is 40 × $20 + 4 × $30 = $920, not 44 × $20. If your state uses daily overtime or a different multiplier, set the fields to match; the calculator applies your rules, not assumptions. Wondering what your time is worth per hour in the first place? The salary calculator converts both ways, and the freelance rate calculator shows why contractors must charge more than an employee's hourly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. 8:30 to 17:00 with a 30-minute lunch is 8.5 hours minus 0.5 = 8 hours. The calculator does this per day and sums the week — overnight shifts (out earlier than in) roll to the next day automatically.

What counts as overtime?

Under the US federal FLSA, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate after 40 hours in a workweek. Some states differ — California adds daily overtime after 8 hours, for example. Set the threshold and multiplier above to match your rules; the split updates instantly.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours for payroll?

Divide minutes by 60: 15 min = 0.25, 30 = 0.5, 45 = 0.75. So 38 hours 45 minutes is 38.75 for payroll. This calculator shows hours-and-minutes for humans and uses exact decimals in the pay math — no rounding tricks.

Are unpaid breaks subtracted from hours worked?

Only if they're genuinely unpaid and you're relieved of duty. US federal rules treat short breaks (5–20 min) as paid time, while bona fide meal periods (typically 30+ min) can be unpaid. Enter only unpaid break minutes in the Break column.

Do you store my timesheet?

No. Times, rate and totals live only in this browser tab and vanish when you close it. Nothing is uploaded, saved or shared — print or screenshot if you need a copy.
